FAQs About Radon Mitigation Systems
Active Radon mitigation systems work by reducing the levels of radon in the home to a safe level. The system is designed to draw air out of the living space and vent it through a PVC pipe that exits the home. This helps reduce the amount of radon that enters the home from both outside sources, as well as from any cracks or other openings in the foundation. The air is then released away from your residence where it can no longer pose a risk.
Passive radon mitigation systems are typically found in homes built after 2001 and have the ventilation components installed and sometimes need only a radon fan. (Electrical outlet is typically present in these previously planned passive systems but not always).
The main components of a typical radon mitigation system are:
1) A Vent Pipe: This pipe is installed on the exterior of your home, typically on its highest point, and vents air drawn from below into the atmosphere. It includes two check valves so that radon gas cannot be drawn back into your house.
2) A Fan: A fan is used to power this process and provides consistent suction, creating an effective vacuum that draws radon out of your living space and vents it outdoors.
3) A Suction Point (up to 3 per fan): These suction points are located inside the lowest level of your home. It connects to the vent pipe using flexible duct work material and draws air inside to be vented outside.
4) Sealing: All areas where radon gas may enter such as cracks between foundation walls, pipes, and sump pits should be sealed with urethane caulk or expanding foam sealant before installation begins in order for the system to work properly.
With careful installation and regular maintenance, a Michigan Better Environmental radon mitigation system will reduce dangerous levels of Radon beneath 4 pCi/L – ensuring a safe environment for you and your family!
